Fall STEM Challenge: Build a Pumpkin Launcher

Fall is one of the easiest times of year to get students excited about learning. The changing season, pumpkins everywhere, and all the fun fall traditions create the perfect opportunity to bring hands-on STEM into your classroom.


If you're looking for a meaningful fall activity that goes beyond coloring pages and worksheets, a Pumpkin STEM Challenge is the perfect way to combine engineering, collaboration, problem-solving, and a little bit of seasonal fun.


Why Fall is the Perfect Time for STEM Activities

Upper elementary students thrive when they're challenged to solve real problems. STEM projects naturally encourage students to think critically, test ideas, learn from mistakes, and work together toward a common goal.


Adding a fall theme makes the experience even more engaging. Instead of simply talking about engineering concepts, students become engineers as they design, build, test, and improve their own creations.


One of my favorite classroom projects is having students build a candy pumpkin launcher!


The Pumpkin Launcher Challenge

In this STEM challenge, students work in small groups to design and build a launcher that can launch a candy corn pumpkin at least one foot.

The goal sounds simple, but students quickly discover that successful engineering takes planning, testing, redesigning, and perseverance.


Throughout the project, students experience the complete engineering design process by:

  • Identifying the challenge

  • Brainstorming possible solutions

  • Creating a detailed plan

  • Building their design

  • Testing and improving their launcher

  • Reflecting on what worked and what they would change


Students quickly learn that their first idea isn't always their best idea—and that's exactly what engineering is all about.


Connecting STEM and Simple Machines

This activity is also a wonderful way to reinforce science concepts.

As students build their launchers, they're naturally exploring simple machines, force, motion, energy transfer, and engineering design without feeling like they're sitting through another lecture.


During testing, students begin asking questions like:

  • What happens if we move the fulcrum?

  • Would another spoon work better?

  • Should we add another rubber band?

  • How can we make it launch farther?

  • Why did that design work better?


These authentic discussions lead to deeper understanding because students are discovering the concepts through experimentation.


Materials You Probably Already Have

One of my favorite things about this project is that it doesn't require expensive STEM kits.


Students create their launchers using common classroom supplies like plastic spoons, rubber bands, paper plates, craft sticks, tape, and any other around the house/classroom supplies!


The only seasonal item you'll need is candy corn pumpkins for launching!


A Four-Day STEM Project That Fits Your Schedule

This challenge was designed for four 40-minute class periods, making it easy to fit into your fall lesson plans without feeling rushed.


Here's how I typically break it up:

Day 1: Introduce the challenge, discuss expectations, and begin planning.

Day 2: Students build their first launcher prototype.

Day 3: Test designs, collect observations, and improve the launcher.

Day 4: Final testing, reflection, and presenting designs with classmates.


Breaking the project into multiple days gives students time to truly think like engineers instead of rushing to finish.


Skills Students Practice

While students are focused on launching candy pumpkins, they're also developing important academic and life skills, including:

  • Engineering design

  • STEM thinking

  • Problem-solving

  • Collaboration

  • Communication

  • Critical thinking
